Some recommendations:it's the lack of songwriting chops that's the problem
yup, thats the primary problem
writing lyrics, especially
in my case, at least
and not enough time because my other hobby is speed scrabble
Get yourself a notebook and start collecting phrases
Write them down by hand on paper
(If you hear or read a good phrase in a dream
write it down as soon as you get up -- some people
keep a notebook next to their beds for this purpose,
but I trained myself to have good dream memory
since my early teens, so I can be more leisurely about it)
Later on you might notice that some of those phrases go well together
OR, that some of them are memorable "target" lines
to land on or to use in the chorus
Writing is an example of the art of combinations
Keep the lines short, or at least easy to sing
A flash of erudition is fine as long as it's delicious
Don't overthink this, but be aware of vowel sounds
on a spectrum of neutral, muted, and bold (similar to watercolors)
(the consonants will probably take care of themselves)
Maybe include something specific here or there
But don't be overly specific and detailed
Leave some room for everyone else's imagination
As Uncle E mentioned, you could write nonsense and others
would probably connect the dots and make something of it
(each in their own way)
Some of the cleverest and flashiest poets and songwriters
tended more toward simplicity as time went on
Have a look at other people's lyrics
to see how lyrics look
You can do it, Harry!

[I know this post is off-topic for the thread, but it seemed slightly better and more polite to post this here than to start a new thread addressed to Harry
