So I was watching an excellent Amazon Prime supernatural/mystery/detective series called "The Devil's Hour" when I heard what was clearly a Pet Shop Boys track featured in one of the episodes. I'm a huge Pet Shop Boys fan but had never heard this song, "I Started a Joke." I subsequently found it on disc 2 of the "deluxe" edition of their 2012 Elysium album. I thought, "This is such a perfect Pet Shop Boys song. It has everything I like about their music, especially the wry, witty lyrics."
Imagine my surprise to learn that the Bee Gees wrote it during their early 1960s "Folk" period! Who knew?
I've always loved Bee Gee's "Saturday Night Fever" tunes. But I wasn't very familiar with their early work. It's amazing! The songwriting is incredible. Very thoughtful and poignant. Again, who knew?
